A Word From Dr. Amaan Kataria On Root Canal Treatment

A root canal treatment is a dental procedure designed to save a tooth that is badly decayed, damaged, or infected. The term “root canal” refers to the natural cavity within the center of the tooth that houses the pulp, which consists of nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue.

A root canal is necessary when the pulp becomes inflamed or infected due to deep decay, repeated dental procedures on the tooth, faulty crowns, or a crack or chip in the tooth. If left untreated, the infection can cause pain or lead to an abscess.

Learn More About Root Canal Treatment

If the soft inner part of your teeth is injured, inflamed or infected, you might need to get a root canal treatment. Our dentists carefully examine the infected or damaged teeth before recommending a root canal treatment. Sometimes the crown of the tooth stays intact even if the pulp is infected. To preserve the tooth, we have to remove the infected or injured pulp. Here are some reasons why the pulp gets damaged:

  • When multiple dental procedures are performed on the same tooth
  • Deep decay due to an untreated cavity
  • A crack or chip in the tooth
  • An injury can also damage the pulp.

If you feel pain in your teeth or the sensation of heat in your gums, you must visit a dentist immediately and get your teeth thoroughly examined. Few of the common symptoms of damaged pulp is pain, swelling and lingerie pain with cold and hot in the tooth. A dental X-ray may be needed to evaluate the situation. After the diagnosis, our dentist will perform the root canal.

FAQ about Root Canal Treatment

A root canal is a dental procedure that involves removing the infected or inflamed pulp from inside a tooth, cleaning and disinfecting the root canals, and then filling and sealing them to prevent further infection.

With modern anesthetics and techniques, most patients report that undergoing a root canal is no more painful than getting a routine filling. The procedure is designed to relieve the pain caused by the infection or inflammation.

Signs that you might need a root canal include:

  • Severe toothache when chewing or applying pressure.

  • Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures.

  • Darkening or discoloration of the tooth.

  • Swelling and tenderness in nearby gums.

  • A persistent or recurring pimple on the gums.

The duration varies depending on the tooth's condition and complexity. Generally, a root canal can be completed in one to two appointments, each lasting about 60 to 90 minutes.

  • After the procedure, it's normal to experience some sensitivity or mild discomfort for a few days, which can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. Maintaining good oral hygiene and following your dentist's instructions are crucial for recovery.

  • Cracks or Chips: Damage exposing the pulp to bacteria.

  • Injury: Trauma leading to pulp damage without visible cracks.

The primary alternative to a root canal is tooth extraction, followed by options to replace the missing tooth, such as a dental implant, bridge, or partial denture. However, preserving the natural tooth through a root canal is generally preferred when possible.

To reduce the risk of needing a root canal:

  • Practice good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing daily.

  • Attend regular dental check-ups and cleanings.

  • Avoid chewing on hard foods or objects that can crack teeth.

  • Wear a mouthguard during contact sports to prevent dental injuries.

Dr Aman did my implant, I was worried about this however he explained the procedure , the indication and other alternatives and spent his time replying to my questions. The implant went well. Dr Aman is a very Gentle dentist, he extracted a wisdom tooth with local freezing, every other Dentist wanted to put me under for that. He took his time doing it and asked me about my pain all through the procedure. His office staff are awesome as well.

Booked an emergency apt here for my partner, he was in so much pain he could not even speak. Reception was so friendly and helpful, and booked us an appointment for the next hour. We were seen quickly, and he received pain relief, and got a root canal in the same day. Dentist and assistant were extremely professional and kind.
